i have installed windows vista on its own partition and also some programs.

does it need to have norton fw/av installed on that partition as well as my
other os or will there be protection from the installation on my xp
partition?

thanks..

You have to have protection on each o/s you are running. As far as I know
Norton will not work on any version of Vista. They do have a beta if you
insist on Norton products. Personally I would never install Norton on any
machine I run.

Go with:

AVAST
AVG
eTrust Antivirus
Trend Internet security
Microsoft OneCare 1.5 coming soon

They all work under Vista and are free or beta versions for testing with
Vista.

I'd use the Windows Firewall in Vista (turned on by default), the AV on the
other installations won't be able to check on the Vista installation when it
is up and running. So if you do want AV you'll need to install it on Vista.

However I'd recommend against using Norton Anti-Virus. There are much
better products out there that 1) actually do work on Vista and 2) work a
lot better all around.

Avast and AVG are good bets, but I'm not sure if AVG works on build 5728.

VISTA 5600 did not want to work with eTrust. Now I have got VISTA 5728 and
Oc-Cillin installed.

We are obliged to use Norton Antivirus for our Business !

Norton Antivirus (Business Pack version 10.2.199 a beta version for RC1) is
working fine on 5728 x86 and it automatically updates its virus definitions.
Norton Firewall is not installed

I'm about to install it on Vista x64.

Chris, I signed up for MS OneCare 1.5 quite a while ago! Do you know if
there's a projected date for the beta release? Thanks. . .

Are you serious? A software firewall and AV installed in one OS cannot
protect another OS when that one is running. Vista has a two way firewall,
no need for another. AFAIK, Symantec does not have an AV for home user
compatible with Vista (they do have one in Beta but you have to be a beta
tester for it). There are free AV products for Vista: Avast, AVG and Trend
Micro.

You're better off without Norton/Symantec products anyway. Give thought to
removing it from the XP system and using some of the free or low cost
alternatives that are much less resource hungry and cause many fewer
problems.

Rock, how does the Vista firewall compare to Zone Alarm Professional in
your testing. I have not yet gotten to that point in my testing of Vista.
