This is a display device resolution calculator (suitable, for
example, for usage with X-windows, and its "dots per inch").

Take an example. 640x480 on a 17" screen.
What that calculator is doing, is dividing the diagonal of
the screen, by the number of dots the video card is using.
So if the current display resolution setting is 640x480, the
diagonal is 800, and the PPI is 17 inches / 800 pixels or
47.06 pixels per inch diagonally. Or 0.021 inches per pixel.
Times 25.4 mm per inch, gives 0.5397 mm dot pitch.

If you're referring to the dot pitch of the phosphor
elements of the CRT tube, that is a more complicated
subject. Wikipedia has some articles, but they're not
technical enough to do justice to the question. I really
think you'd need to find a textbook of some kind, to
find a good answer.
