Utilities to monitor Internet Speed

COX Cable advertises 5 Megs (don't know whether this is megabits or bytes).
But my connection is far slower than this. I am looking for a utility that
monitors connection speed in real time and, hopefully, sits in the system
tray. Also, any suggestions in how to get COX to do what is necessary to
increase the speed in my neighborhood. Thanks........

If Cox is like other ISPs then they use the term "up to" in front of the
speed. Any speed up to 5 megs is ok as far as they are concerned.

The above is a bandwidth meter, along with a couple of other tools. If you
go back to the homepage of this site, you will find a large number of
'internet' related downloads (both free and shareware), as well as a lot of
others. This site includes guides and tutorials that are quite useful and
worth perusing. Note: the above tool is not the only one in the long
list.....look over what is available and make up your own mind. Each has a
link to the originator's site for further info.
BTW, I, too, have the Cox 5 Meg connection and rarely find it any faster
than my mother's DSL (1.5M). A great deal depends on the number of
subscribers and their activity at any given time on your leg of the circuit.
Also, the site to which you are connected makes a big difference. Cox's
advertised speeds are based on your connection to their server. If you call
their tech assist, they can run a speed test with you........of course, once
you leave their server onto the Net, you won't be maintaining those speeds.

Cox advertises speeds (depending on your area) "up to" 9 Mbps.
They chose their wording carefully on purpose.
"up to".

It's Mega-Bits per Second.

They work on "shared bandwidth" - like everyone else. So just because at
5:45PM on a random thursday your speed is not even 1Mbps, well - that's
because everyone else is hogging the bandwidth. "up to".

If you want a guaranteed speed - you are actually going to have to pay a lot
more than $29.95 to $69.95 per month. heh

Also - I saw you post elsewhere about speed accelerators - don't do it. Any
gain you get will be monir at best and likely will not effect whatever it is
you are truly doing (game playing, ftping, remoting to your other computers,
just surfing the web..)
