Hi folks! Is anyone aware of a freeware utility
that will lock registry file type associations? I've
got them set out just the way I want them for
the majority of file types I use (including changes
to the context menu) and I'd hate for some
sick and twisted app. to come along and change
then when it thinks its doing me a favour. ;-)

Well, I don't know about such a program, but some more or less working
tricks:

1) If you're using Windows 200, XP or 2003 or 2005 Media Edition:
You can set permissions on registy keys and values. If you set the values of
the file assosiation to read only for both all users and the system, the
file associations can not be changed.

2) An other ay would be to create a reg file with all the prefered settings
and run it at start up, so any changes would be lost. this would also work
for windows 9x / ME

How ever, if you're not comforatble with messing arround in the registy,
this could be tricky. Afteral, deleting or modifying the wrong keys may even
result in blue screens of death or unbootable computers. So be carefull

WinPatrol maintains a list of file associations and will ask you to
accept/refuse any attempt to change.
