Hi i work at a school were the network environment is
2000, and the majority of the machines cannot run XP at
the moment. But there are about 100 that can. I have
installed xp on two machines for testing purposes. I'm
having trouble when logging on, it takes ages to log on a
users profile. When it has logged on, everything is fine.
Plus the school would like to activate the usb ports and
cdroms on the xp pro machines but not on the win 2000
machines. Is this possible, and if so how can it be done.

Any help would be greatful

Make sure the XP client's are pointing to the DNS server for the domain and
not an ISP DNS server.

Are you using a Windows 2000 domain or is it an NT4 domain?
If you are using an NT4 domain, make sure that you have a WINS server
configured and all clients (including the domain controllers are pointing
to the WINS server).

If you are using a Windows 2000 (or later) domain, use the following to set
DNS server:

Are the XP machines using DHCP (automatically configure IP settings...")?
If so, check the scope on the DHCP server and make sure that it lists the
internal DNS server that is authoritative for the domain.

If the XP machines are using static IP addresses, you need to change the
DNS server settings in the TCP/IP properties (under the properties of the
Network card in Network adn dialup connections).

For enabling/disabling the USB devices and CD-ROM drives, you have to setup
a group policy on the domain. You'll find the relevant settings under
Computer Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/ Security Options.
