Hi,

I have a broadband connection, and I use a WinXP PC as my server.
I use it as a ftp server, a pop/smtp and web server.
I don't need a real "OS" server, since only me ans few frinds needs access
to my ftp, IIS or mail server

I have a small kid (3 years old), who, as soon a gets close to the keyboard,
starts pressin buttons and playing with the mouse.
Because of this, very often I found the server pc shut-down (the kid doesn't
have access to power button although, but I saw she discovered how to shut
down).
And because of this the server is no longer available form Internet, when I
need it most.
I cannot disconnect the kb, since it is a laptop pc.

I managed to config it wth Group policy to not show WinXP start screen
anymore, and to log-on as Win2000 (with the window to ask for ctrl+Alt+del),
and tyo ask to enter username and password, and also to not allow shutdown
from Logon window.

However I discovered a strange issue:

While windows shows the window telling "Press Ctrl Alt Del to begin".
But if I don't press Ctrl Alt Del, but start pressing buttons randomly, the
PC ... Restarts!

Is there any way to prevent this?

Thank you
Bogdan

Put the computer is a securely locked, ventilated cabinet or
drawer.

You might be able to simply close the lid.

You could put it on a tall shelf with no chairs near.

Get a desktop computer that you can remove the keyboard from
while it is in use (USB hot swappable, not PS/2)

Get the kid a "kids laptop" at toys r us or where ever.

Put up an electric fence around the computer, 5000 volts,
0.00001 amp, it will keep the dogs and kids away.

Depending on your agreement with your ISP, it may contravene the Conditions
of Service to run an FTP server. Check with them before you do anything - or
you may lose your connection - permanently. Many ISPs take a dim view of
this.

Hi,

The agreement with my ISP doesn't forbid any of those servers, so this is
not a problem.

Hi,
Put the computer is a securely locked, ventilated cabinet or
drawer.

Not possible, I also use it sometimes (actually it is my wife's pc).
You might be able to simply close the lid.

She knows how to open it. But it is still an idea.
You could put it on a tall shelf with no chairs near.

Not possible, see above
Get a desktop computer that you can remove the keyboard from
while it is in use (USB hot swappable, not PS/2)

I just get rid of my desktops to get the laptops, so I won't go back.
I use them with wireless network, since we move them all over the house, as
we heed.
Get the kid a "kids laptop" at toys r us or where ever.

Don't think it will work. The kids have a very developed "feeling" to know
what is the "real" thing, and they want to play with it
I tried to buy a cellular toy. Do you think she is interested in it? Not a
chance. She still "hunt" mine, as soon as she finds it.
Put up an electric fence around the computer, 5000 volts,
0.00001 amp, it will keep the dogs and kids away.

Well, she's still my girl. not my cat, so I don't want to use this
treatment.

Doesn't windows has something in it (some setting) to prevent any other key
press while waiting for CTRL ALT DEL to open logon window?

Cheers,
Bogdan

Not that I know of, but you might ask the laptop mfg'r tech
support.

You could get some super glue and attach a hasp and padlock
to the lid, that will keep the kid out. BTW, mild electric
shock is addictive, I got so I could grab a cattle fence and
climb over. The weed cutter, high amperage systems did mean
I had to have a ground, those are at 25,000 volts and about
0.25 amps. When a weed touches the wire, it is burned off
to prevent shorting.

I wasn't really serious about using the electric fence...

If your kid is 3 and smart enough USE a computer,
congratulations. Get her a used laptop. put some graphics
editor and kid friendly software on it and then teach her
that her computer is her computer and she is not to touch
mommy and daddy's computers.

Greetings --

Very simple. Keep the child away from the computer. She _is_
being supervised by an adult, isn't she?
