Using Word XP as editor with Outlook 2k3

I have a customer using Office XP, he was consistently have issues with
Outlook due to the 2GB PST size limit, I upgraded him to Outlook 2k3 and he
can no longer use Word as the email editor (option is grayed out), do Word
and Outlook need to be the same version for this to work?
