i embedded a movie in a powerpoint slide and also have tried to view the
movie with media player. It plays fine on my computer screen but when I use
a projector I get the player and sound but only a black screen where the
movie is suppose to be although it is visable on my laptop. What can I do to
make the moviemaker movie project through the LCD projector (Dell 3200MP)?
Thanks

One reason could be the Video Acceleration.
In the Media Player go to Tools -> Options -> Performance and lower the
video acceleration to minimum. If it works then tweak the slider back up one
bit at a time and/or adjust the Advanced options. Particularly try disabling
the "Use overlay" option.

Thanks for responding to my question. The movie play well on my computer
screen it just does not show up on the projected image although the
mediaplayer is showing up and the music is playing. I will try the
acceleration adjustment. If you think of anything else let me know. Also
what would I need to do to convert a movie maker file to DVD?

Hello,

Whatever you do DO NOT MESS WITH THE ACCELERATION in XP. It has
absolutely nothing to do with your problem.

DirectX capable devices have to be set up to receive the video, which
translates to you have to set-up the desktop so that the secondary device
can handle the DirectX image. DirectX images are a special case and are
handled differently

Whether you are using a second desktop (some call it a Dual desktop) you
MUST have drivers that can deliver the right signal to the projector.

An XP compatible interface should come with the projector (If you are
running it from a second Graphics Card) If you are running both devices from
the one card you need the driver capable of delivering from signal, you
would get that from the manufacturer of the card...its some time since I did
this but for the NVidia based cards from Gainward the utility is called
Desktop Manager or Smart Manager.

In the set-up dialog you get the opportunity to identify which must be
the primary display (You get a big Number 1 or 2 appear in the display) then
once you know which is which you can edit the settings within those
permitted by that display device. It will also allow you to specify more
than one desktop on your main computer screen....it makes for easy switching
between programs without having to minimise one and expand the other...its
tricky at first but once you have played with it for a while you will be
able to use it as easily as your old set-up

Hello,

See my other reply about the projector.

To make a DVD from your project you will need other software. A program like
MyDVD, Nero 6 Reloaded or Dazzle DVD Complete will take the DV-AVI output from
Movie Maker and create a DVD out of it. Nero and DVD complete also have
extensive options when creating the usual menu system that you associate with
DVD's

It sometimes happens that a new DVD burner is supplied with burning software.
The software will be basic but will all the same get you heading in the right
direction.

Thanks for your reply. I think your site is the most useful I have seen. I
will refer to it often and purchase your book. thanks again for taking tihe
time to answer my question.. Michael Owens

Hello,

Ha, that is so funny....actually the only books I have ever written are only
available from the British Government Home Office and must be well out of date
by now.

The advice given you though still applies and is not out of date. Hint, I had
your problems just prior to a demonstration of a software package I
wrote.....the demo was supposed to be across several monitors, but the Chief
himself decided to come with ALL of the command staff and they wanted it on a
projector....we literally had to send out for one on the promise it might bring
them some business if they let us loan it for nothing...I suspect we got the
loan because at that time I was a Policeman......it was blind luck that the
graphics card on my computer (personal machine not a Police machine) had a dual
output. This was about 12years ago...it was one of those days, if they had said
walk on water I could have asked how far? and got away with it.

Have Fun.

Michael,

My laptop uses an ATI display adaptor. Its help file for multiple displays
has the following:

"Video Overlay allows for the viewing of full-motion video on your computer.
However, there is only one video overlay in hardware. For display
arrangements consisting of a primary and a clone, the video overlay is only
available on the primary display. (For extended desktop arrangements, the
video overlay will be visible across all displays.)"

I suspect this is where your issue lies as I had the same symptoms and found
the above. In Control Panel go to "Display - Settings - Advanced" and poke
around in there and use the Help. How you make a particular display
"Primary" may depend on your video driver and if it has additional tabs for
it in the "Advanced " area.
