I am running XP Home with SP2 on a Dell Dimension 9130. I have used the
Windows back up routine to back up selected files to an external drive in the
past. This works ok, but when I attempt to generate a recovery diskette I get
the following error message:
"The files for the recovery diskette could not be created. The operation
was aborted."
This message appears even before the backup occurs. I have no idea why this
problem has occurred. Can anyone advise me what's wrong and how do I obtain
the recovery diskette?............Thanks

That message would normally appear if you have specified ASR, automated
system recovery. ASR is for a full backup, not selected files, and the
recovery diskette holds partition information.

ASR isn't supported on XP Home, will not run, and so this error message is
normal.

Now, it apparently is possible to create the diskette, but you still won't
be able to use it for ASR.

Thanks Patrick, I would follow the recomendations in kb/302700 but I do not
have the CD as XP home came installed with the computer. Can you suggest
where I might obtain the file "Ntbackup.msi "?--

You shouldn't need it if you are already running ntbackup. You can't use
ASR anyway, so the floppy is of limited use.

Would suggest that you consider other, more modern backup solutions,
including Acronis TrueImage, Ghost, Backup Plus etc.

You could borrow another CD for that particular purpose. It's not too
hard to find someone with an XP Pro CD. You aren't going to install XP, so
there isn't really a license issue. You can also google it to find a
download, but if you are concerned about file authenticity, borrow a CD.
