Using Win2K as the Host

The host machine I use runs Windows 2000 Professional (SP4). Everything
from Component Designer to Database Manager to Target Designer works
perfectly. The only issue arises when I try to boot the XP Embedded image
on a different partition of the same computer. I get the following error
message: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown
to prevent damage to your computer," followed by a more detailed description
of the error.

The workaround I found is to copy the NT loader executable (ntldr) that was
generated with the XP Embedded image over to the system drive to overwrite
the one that came with Win2K. This seems to have taken care of the
problem. What I'd like to know is, is this the correct way to use Win2K as
the host development environment?

Thanks,
Dai

It's ok to use your development machine to experiment on, but it's at your
own risk. A lot of people use a separate machine to test on so they don't
accidentally hose their host machine's system partition.
With respect to replacing the ntldr, that's fine. The XP version is
backwards compatible with win2k as you found, that's what you should have
done.
