In XP, when I have 2 or more columns of icons on the desktop, and I click the top icon in the second column and hold the shift key then click the bottom icon, all the icons to the left are selected as well. I want to select just the one column. So far, I can only do it if I use the ctrl key and select each icon one at a time

I can't seem to modify the sequence. Can you help?

I have 4 columns and am seeing the same thing. Workaround: Use the "lasso"
technique. Click just to the upper left of the column. Press and hold the
mouse button. Then move the mousse pointer to the lower right hand corner.
You should see a dotted selection line following the pointer. When all of
the icons in the column are bounded by the dotted selection line, release
your mouse button.
