I have an issue with my network at home. I have a laptop running WindowsXP
Pro, which is setup to log onto my work domain called FUTURE. At home, I
have a desktop running WindowsXP Home. I would like to be able to setup my
home network so I can log on to the FUTURE domain through a VPN and print to
the desktop's printer. But I haven't been able to figure out how to do
this.

I don't think I can change the network settings on the laptop, or it will
prevent me from logging onto the FUTURE domain. I can setup the desktop
however is required. I tried setting the desktop's workgroup as FUTURE.
When I did this, the laptop could see the desktop listed under the FUTURE
domain. However, the laptop could not access anything on the desktop. I
did have the desktop setup for file and printer sharing, but was denied
access. Meanwhile, the desktop received an error that it could not be
authenticated on the FUTURE domain, and it could not see any computers on
the domain.

Any ideas?

Derek,
I have been able to get a partial solution to this problem (still looking
for a better one). The problem is the domain (Future in your case). My home
network uses a combination router/WAP. There is a wired connection to the
desktop (XP Home), and a wireless connection to the laptop (XP Pro). The
laptop is a work computer set up for domain XXX. I also can't change the
laptop's domain or I can't connect to the office's network.Here's what I
did.
First I resolved some firewall issues (the desktop PC runs NIS 2004) and
placed the laptop in the Trusted Zone on the desktop PC. Once I was able to
ping back and forth, I set the desktop's workgroup to XXX (same name as the
domain on the laptop). If it works the same for you, on the laptop, Network
Neighborhood->Entire Network should show the Domain (Future). If you click
on the Domain. you should see the desktop PC listed. I then created a
directory on the desktop PC called Public (any name will do) and shared it.
On the laptop, I mapped a Network drive/share using the shared Public folder
on the desktop PC as the target. I set up the printer attached to the
desktop PC for sharing and gave it a share name. I installed the printer
driver from the desktop's printer on the laptop by setting it up on the
laptop as a network printer -pointing to the share name.
Now, so long as I am not VPN'ed to one of my work locations, files can be
shared by placing them in the Public folder on the desktop PC or from the
laptop by placing the files in the mapped network share Public. I can print
directly to the desktop's printer from applications on the laptop. Note, you
can share the entire drive on the desktop if you wish, but there are
performance issues with this (slow navigation, etc). No files can be shared
directly on the laptop (not authorized, etc).

HTH,
Xekester
