Using SEARCH .....

Is there any way to get this program to work as well as it does in W98SE? I
spent 10 minutes having it search many times for a file containing the word
"Walnut Street" I knew I had saved, and as usual it couldn't locate this
file - which turned out to be located in a folder right on the desktop.
What method is used that works? I used all files and folders, including
hidden files and it still came up empty handed. I had it search "My
Computer" and both C and D drives etc.

I had to find the damn file myself and it took almost 30 minutes..... I'm
really sick of this. (40 minutes to locate a file W98 would have found in
seconds.) About 1/2 the time it can't locate a file and I have to hand
search many folders looking for them.... anyone????

I understand your frustration bigtime! MS broke what was an excellent
seaarching feature that was/is in 98/ME/2000. XP's doesn't do a very good
job. I am unsure if SP2 (when it arrive soon) will address this issue or
not.

In any event, download and use this nifty little proggy called "Agent
Ransack", it works a treat!

* It does a horrible job. How can it MISS so many things searched for????
And no patch or work around no less, after all this time.

I am unsure if SP2 (when it arrive soon) will address this issue or
not.

I can't help notice none of the MS people replied to the problems of SEARCH
failing so miserably to locate files.

Please keep recommending this software here as it WORKS! It finds what XP's
SEARCH cannot locate. :-) I am recommending it to my friends who also
suffer the near useless SEARCH in WXP.

Yeah, same here. I follow any thread like this,
expecting to find some "AHA!" answer, but I guess not.
I HAVE however found that, unless I'm looking for text
within a file, searching My Computer is reliable, in
my case at least. Searching Local Drives never finds a
damned thing though, I don't think. I can't even
figure out any repeatability in what it will and won't
find - there's no obvious pattern to it.
That, and the lack of an update or workaround for it
makes me think there is something horrendously wrong in
XP that they're going to keep hidden if they can. I
keep wondering how many occasional problems I blame
myself for are actually XP's fault? XP's more stable,
but boy, in some areas, it's sure not even AS
dependable as 98 was! My sister gave up and went back
to 98. I won't do that, yet, but it's getting ...

* Mine is pitiful. The word Walnut Street was in a file (as part of an
address). I searched every way possible and it still missed it. That was

* EXACTLY!!!! That's what makes it so aggravating and irritating,
especially when I need the information in a hurry.

* I fear I suspect the SAME thing. I was so spoiled by W98 search feature
which never failed and worked in seconds. On XP SEARCH is so slow and
ponderous - and then can't find the file and it's right in a folder on the
desktop.

That's true. This SEARCH feature has been the pits and a sore spot right
from the start though.

Did you catch the workaround that was posted? I found
it shortly after posting my little bitch - and it did
seem to fix things - so far. Turns out an easy one,
too. It was near my post in the overall list - if
can't find, lemme know, I'll locate it.
