I XP using run \\name of computer\c$ doesn't work. Why and how can I get
around it?

that's because you aren't actually running a command - what exactly are
you trying to do?

\\serenity\C$

Will open a folder window at my C drive (if you are an administrator). \\serenity is my computer name, C is a standard admin share and $ means it is hidden.

\\serenity\Admin$ is System32

and there are others.

Gordon I am trying to access the 'c' drive on the xp machine to move personal
files and desktop setting from one computer to another.

Hi David, I understand how to do it, and most of the other commands that is
not the problem
when I enter the \\name\C$ it tells me the computer can not be accessed. I
am still looking for the answer between the computers.

Thanks for the help you were making me think. These ore the first XP
machines on our network and to do the \\name\c$ the firewall has to be turned
off.
Thanks again.

turning off firewall? that is a blunt instrument. Are you saying File and
printing being checked in windows firewall does not help? or are you using
some other firewall that does not have this option?
