A friend has bought a new A64 3000+ and a Socket 939 MSI board. He was
told he needed to upgrade to PC3200 ram by the salesman even though he
had some older PC2100 ram from his current system which he had wanted to
transfer. Salesman said it'll complain. I was saying sure it'll be a
performance hit, but as long as the default BIOS state is to read the
ram parameters from the SPD, the machine should be able to adjust to
whatever speed settings are necessary. Shouldn't that be the case?

The verified memory list (I believe I read one in the pdf manual,
although I don't remember for sure) should indicate if PC2100 is usable
or not. I just used a couple of Corsair valueselect 256MB PC3200 sticks
though, and there were no problems.

Here's the link to MSI's page on the mobo. Scroll down and note that it
only says that the mobo supports DDR333 and DDR400 memory.

It'll probably work at 133 FSB.The A64 runs at 200FSB. That's a huge
performance hit!!. You can get 512M PC3200 for around $40 now.
