Using Outlook Externally?

I'm a complete newbie to all this, so please be patient. I've just installed an Exchange 2003 server on our network to handle our mail. I can use Outlook to access my mail in the office, but I want to be able to use it from home. Do I need to open a port on our firewall to access the server. If so, does anyone have any idea of what the port number would be, or how I could find out

If you're replying, please try not to be too technical in your language. Sorry, but I'm doing all of this blind - I'm such a newbie that it took me 2 weeks just to set the server up!

Sounds like you should ask your manager for a course in installing, managing
and configuring Exchange.
Things you should be looking for is;
-how to configure Outlook Web Access (part of Exchange)
-how to configure IMAP (part of Exchange)
-how you can setup a VPN (part of Windows Server)

All these solutions are beyond the scope of the newsgroup as they are not
part of Outlook.
