Hi all,
I kinda of ask this question before and received a reply pointing me to an
article saying not to use *.pst files on a lan or wan, but I took it that it
mean't if you were using the email part.
I want to setup outlook 2003 for my users to use just for the calendar and
contacts.
Can anyone tell me the steps in setting up a user just for this and have
their *.pst file on the server in their home directory? Can this be done
without setting up an email account for them?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

The problem with using a .PST on a LAN or WAN is that the risk of file
corruption is increased, and it doesn't matter whether the .PST contains
e-mail, contacts, appointments, or what have you. If someone has the .PST
open on their machine and the server goes down, that .PST file has likely
just been corrupted.

Is this the article you've already read?
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm There should be a lot of ideas
for you there.

Hi Jocelyn,
Ok, now my users want to just try and use Outlook 2003 as a pst file on
their harddrive so that they can use calendar and contacts. Is there a way
to set outlook up to do that? If so, will the users have problems because
some of the features require networking and if so is there a way to disable
those features. I got some debug errors when I was testing it. (can it be
setup so that more than one person can use outlook on the same pc with a
diffferent profile?)
I have really fought going this route but users insist.

Installing Outlook will automatically create a PST for people to use, in
general. If they can open Outlook at all without it complaining, then they
already have a PST.

Only if people want to share folders is any kind of networking required.

Certainly. Control Panel's Mail applet will do that.

Hi Brian,
Clicking on outlook under the users name it starts a wizard and I said no
email support. It created a pst file under users documents and settings .
But, user wants to use mail merge from their contact list. No names show up
when they try to merge contact list. Do I need to setup something else and
where?

I've never done a mail merge so don't know with certainty, but I strongly
suspect that you must have Outlook configured for mail in order to use it
for a mail merge.

I'm not sure either if you can do a mail merge without having a mail account
set up, even if you're only trying to merge to a Word document or something.
However, have you tried starting the merge from Word instead of Outlook, or
vice versa, to see if one or the other will work?
