Using Office (Word) AS Default Word Processor

My computer came with Works as default word processor. I installed Office
2003, but the saved documents save as a Works doc. and the spell check in my
windows mail still does not work. I was told that it originally did not work
because Word was not the default WP. Am I missing a step?
