My daughter's computer was given to her. If we can't find the serial no. can
I use my copy of windows xp to do a clean install on her computer? What kind
of problems might I encounter from microsoft? Thanks

wait a minute.i don't think this is going to work!?!? u tack the cd from
ur pc u wipe ur daughter's hdd ur installing windows.the cd installs most
of windows.then it asks for serial number.it has the number that is on
ur pc.it won't accept her serial number.u have to use ur serial number.
now u have 2 computers with same serial number.that should be interesting
lol when u actavate.i reinstalled windows me many times.(on my 1 pc) the cd
ONLY accepted **1** serial number!!!! i assume if i tryed to put it on
someone else's pc i would **have to** use MY serial number.then we would have
2 pc's same copy right number.(illegal) i'v never installed xp.so i could be

Please don't use chat room shorthand in the newsgroups. And try using basic
punctuation. Your reply is anything but easy to read.

As things now stand, you need to purchase a separate WinXP license for
each computer on which you install it. (As long as you have multiple
identical licenses, it doesn't matter if you use the same CD for the
installations, as long as you use a different license each time.)

Just as it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating
systems, it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which it
is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to determine
final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism,
Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more difficult)
multiple installations using a single license.

One can buy additional licenses, assuming one already has a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would if
you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

Another poster here suggested using a tool to discover the current
serial no. on her computer. I agree strongly, seeing as how someone has
already paid micro$oft a shitload of money for a Windows license on that
machine, it doesn't make sense that you should do the same all over
again simply because you want to do a fresh install.

Further, I would suggest to have your daughter bug her friend (if at all
possible) for the original Windows install CD, since unless through
disastrous circumstances it was destroyed, it's probably still
*somewhere*. And if you got it, everything would suddenly be alot easier.

Otherwise, you'll have to figure out what her current serial # is (which
is rather easy), and then do a fresh install from a CD with the
*identical* version of windows (which may be rather hard, unless you are
very lucky and already have it).

good luck...
