I've heard that it is possible to use a computer as a fax-machine. I've
tried to set it up, but I only get a message telling me to connect a modem.
Now the machine I want to send and recieve faxes with, are attached to the
i.net through a home-network, where I use a win98-machine to do the dialup
for me. So I guess that my question is this: do I have to move the modem
over to the machine I'm using, or is there some way of 'tricking' windows?
(I'm using XP on the other machine.)

I believe you are asking two questions.

1. Can you use a PC as a fax-machine. The answer is yes if you have XP, W2K
or W2K03 on the box. The fax software is part of the OS. You can enable the
feature from Start\ControlPanel\Add or Remove Programs\Add/Remove Windows
Components. Just check the Fax Services check box. Some files will get
copied (you may need the original Windows CD) and the feature will be
enabled. You can send/receive faxes from the PC as if it were a fax machine.

2. Can you use a modem on a remote machine to send/receive faxes. You can do
this if the modem is installed on W2K or W2K03 - these OS variants support
sharing a fax modem to Fax clients running on other client PCs - so from
your XP client you can connect to a server with the Fax modem installed and
use it to send/receive faxes as if it were on the local box.

Your best bet for documentation is on line help. Just search for Fax. You
can also refer to some knowledge base articles on the Microsoft support web
site.
