using MM over a network

Will MM work as effficiently when working with files on a server as opposed to files on the hard drive. We are in a school lab and students work seperately to create portions of movies. In the past when we've worked with iMovie on Macs, we couldn't use files on the server. Is the same true with MM?

It should work even if the students are all using the same source files.
I've had no problems using source files on other computers via my home
network.

And I've often used the same source files with MM1 and MM2 running in
parallel with no issues. As Movie Maker doesn't change the source files, I'd
think multiple users on different computers wouldn't have any problems.

Hello there,

Movie Maker is not network aware. The remote hard drives on your network
will be visible from within movie maker and using them as source files (The
video clips to be worked on) is fine.

The files that Movie Maker itself uses, private files like the
collection database and the project description files can not be shared, if
you do you will experience the same problem other teachers/lecturer's have
experienced, the files get written over by Movie Maker on another terminal
and everything goes pair shaped.

So, as long as the "project" and the "Collections" are kept local, all
of the source files can be kept anywhere, remember though that if it is your
intent to manufacture project files in advance, then the full path name to
the location of the source files must be exactly the same from each
terminal.

As compiling a final video (Which should be done to a private/local
folder) is not time/speed dependent you will have little problem. The only
thing you might need to wonder about is what is the average transfer speed
to a terminal. If all the students request large files at the same moment,
there could be a severe congestion problem on your network.

Hope that helps a little.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Yes, and I think you'd want to be sure you're on at least a
Fast Ethernet or equivalent (the 100 in 10/100), or even
better the faster versions. My switch balked at one point
and I had my home lan running at the 10 and ANY ofther
activity on any of the other computers made things pretty
cumbersome.
I'm not saying it won't/can't/shouldn't be used: I'm just
saying, sine you likely have a 10/100, make sure they're
getting the 100 thruput setup. "Minor" detail, but ... .
Hope that made sense

Hi
I have an issue where, through AD I have selected the option to 'hide the C:
drive from my computer' (for obvious reasons!), but not to prevent access.
When students (age 11-16) open MM, nothing happens when clicking on Import
Video/Import pictures or Import audio or music. I have added a software path
rule in AD to allow unrestricted access to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker. This
has made no difference at all.

It's really frustrating me now! Any help much appreciated

Thanks
Nat
