Using LCD TV as a monitor?

I don't play games. It would mainly be used to surf the net, view home
pictures and movies. It seems like it would be ideal to have two windows
open, doing different things. Or i could by two 19 inch monitors. But then
you would lose the ability to watch wide screen DVDs.

We you don't actually lose the ability to do anything with 2x 19"
monitors - that's the setup i use and it allows me to have a movie file open
on one monitor whilst browsing or chatting in IRC on the other - but then
for serious movie watching I have a dedicated home theatre system/plasma
setup in another room. I can't actually see any reason however why the LCD
wouldn't be idea for your needs given that gaming is not one of your
requirements.

I have a very large desk and was thinking of using this TV
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3757024 for a
monitor. I know this has been discussed before, but with the
resolutions getting better, what might the negatives be to using this
monitor?

From the specs, it seems to be a lower end computer display panel - I
think only you would be able to determine if it would suffice for your
needs.

As another data point: While it does not have a TV tuner, but does
have component inputs, a higher-end panel such as the Dell 2405FPW has
much higher resolution (1920x1200) and contrast ratio (1000:1) and can
be had for $780 if you watch the coupon sites (like www.gotapex.com ).

I have seen it on. It is quite clear, even up close. Yea that Dell would be
quite nice. Thanks for the input. I think i am just going to wait for a
while. The prices seem to be coming down fast, and i really don't need the
top of the line for what i will use it for. Thanks everybody.

You do realize it's a Widescreen display but only has an analog tuner? You
don't mention having anything to display in it that would need a wide
screen. Were you just looking for future use?

1280x768 is an odd resolution. You'll probably have to play games at
1024x768 with black bands at the side. Also, keep in mind that most PC LCD
monitors of that size are at 1600x1200 (for 4:3) or 1920x1200 resolution, so
will look much more crisp.

With a Radeon 9000 you probably won't be doing a lot of higher-end gaming as
the video card can't really support it, so unless you need a lot more
desktop real estate, it will probably suffice. I prefer much higher
resolutions for my PC desktop (run at 1600x1200) but that's entirely
personal preference.
