I have 4 computers networked. For some odd reason, I can
only access files on another computer if I uncheck the XP
built-in firewall. Why? Also, how can I tell XP built-in
firewall to tell which applications to use?

.
I got informed about this in index from net work
connection. Since I dont have a network, i forgot about
it, but I remember seen this case. Go to control
panel/network and internet/network connections. From the
menu click help, then support.

By design, XP's Internet Connection Firewall blocks file and printer
sharing. It's for use only on a direct modem connection to the
Internet. You must disable it on a local area network connection.

ICF is a very basic firewall that, in my opinion, is meant for use by
people who don't know that they need a firewall. It doesn't have
configuration options like commercial firewall products from Zone
Labs, Norton, Sygate, etc.
