I am running a 2000 domain.
I was wondering if it is possible to use group policy to
make a machine check for critical patches or symantec
updates?
If so, how?

Regards,

I don't know about checking for virus updates, unless you can copy a
configuration file to each computer that will enable auto check - you will
need to look at your anti virus vendor documentation about that but you can
use Software Update Services [free from MS] on an IIS server in the domain
to download and authorized patches and then configure Group Policy to have
computers automatically check for updates based on schedule that does not
require local administrator rights. The links below may be helpful.
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer can also scan computers on your network
looking for missing patches and other security vulnerabilities. --- Steve
