Using GP to deploy MS Security Updates

You are not supposed to deploy security patches with GPO. Never were. ;)
Use WSUS instead or SMS.

Thanks for your help.

If the computers were able to always successfully update using standard
Windows update, I would hae no need for an alternate method of deploying
updates. I previously tried SUS and had several computers ignore updates
completely for no apparent reason. How can I be sure the effort and time
involved in setting up WSUS will not leave me just as vulnerable as trying to
rely on SUS or standard Windows Update?

This "Background" service does not give me the peace of mind that a strong
GP would. No way of telling easily if all the clients are up to date. I just
don't trust it. Has the technology improved since SUS?

I can't guarantee you your time and effort won't be wasted. I don't know
your skills.
If you set it up right it will work right.

There are plenty of other products out there that download and patch
Operating systems. You can just as easily spend your money and not set them
up right and they won't work.
