I am using windows vista. MSN is my internet service provider but I have a
free email account with them. My brother told me I could use my gmail
account with windows mail and have that work. I have tried to set it up
filling in the appropriate information (pop3, smtp), but I am unable to get a
connection. I try to send mail and it will not. I've tried to retrieve mail
out of my gmail account and cannot. I have no idea what to do and the help
suggestions are leading me in circles. Does anybody have any suggestions?

The links describe setup for Outlook Express, Windows mail setup is exactly
the same.

Check your settings as per:

Stick with it... make sure you have followed the instructions on the
following link

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13276

Don't worry about it saying Outlook Express,
the details are the same, and pay particular attention
to the final part... ie,

* Did you click 'Save Changes' after enabling POP in Google Mail? To ensure
that Google Mail can communicate with your mail client, make sure you click
'Save Changes' on the 'Forwarding and POP' tab in your Google Mail settings.

I am having the same trouble and have gone round and round. Finally I have
gotten to the point where I am trying to send a test email and now I am going
round and round and getting stopped at Logon to pop.gmail.com I put in
my user name and password and it just keeps popping back at tme. I believe I
am using the right name and password.... gggrrrrrrrrrr I checked the box
that asks to remember credentials.

Have you tried "(e-mail address removed)" and password?

Make sure the "Logon using Secure Password Authentication" is unchecked.

Ignore my

"Have you tried "(e-mail address removed)" and password?" suggestion.

I misread you and thought you were talking about logging onto the Gmail web
page.

Sorry, last night I got too frustrated and had to stop.

I have done all of this and it still is popping up with user name and
password.
I do not see where this is,
"Logon using Secure Password Authentication" is unchecked.
I have done it manual. It has been turned off and on a couple of times. I
did save changes. I believe I have followed all directions.

OK, it HAS to work if set up right.

Firstly you need to go to your Google Account via Web Mail and make sure it
is set to download to Pop3 within the settings that are there. Nothing will
work unless this is done FIRST.

Then in Windows Mail and in TOOLS/ACCOUNTS and look at the GMail account you
have set up.

Do EXACTLY this

On the GENERAL Tab, make sure there is a tick in the "Include this account
when sending" box

On the SERVERS Tab

pop.gmail.com
smtp.gmail.com
Your E-Mail username is the full E-mail address i.e. (e-mail address removed)
Tick "Remember Password"
NO tick in "Log on using Secure Password Authentication"
TICK My "Server Requires Authentication"
Under the SETTINGS Button to right of last one just a tick in the top box
"Use same settings etc"

On the CONNECTION Tab

Just leave that blank

On the SECURITY Tab

Just have 3DES as the Algorithm, nothing else needed on this page

On the ADVANCED Tab (and do these in order as they can change each other)

For OUTGOING: TICK "This server requires a SSL". It should then put the
Port to 465, if it doesn't make it that

For INCOMING: TICK "This server requires a SSL". It should then put the
Port to 995, if it doesn't make it that

Nothing else on this page is needed to be ticked

DON'T FORGET to click APPLY at the bottom

That HAS to work. If not then those ports are being blocked by either your
Firewall (turn Firewall off to prove this) or by your ISP (need to call
them) or possibly even your Router (go into set-up page for your Router or
call the Router Manufacturers Help desk)

We, I mean you, DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang, I am so flubbing tierd, I have already forgotten what it was that
wasn't right. Oh, it was "use same settings etc.". That and I was checking
and unchecking the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" and "Server
Requires Authentication" with all the different directions.

THANK YOU, Frenchy!!!!!!!!!!!!
