I have an MDG computer with 40 gig hard drive.
I also have a 160 gig hard drive with USB connection and
external power.
Question:
How or where can I determine how to use this equipment to
do a total back up of programs (with options selected)
and all files.
Is there a book available or instructions somwhere on the
internet?

Usually a backup would be on a cd not a hd,with that use file transfe
wizard,set comp.as old,transfer settings,files,etc.to a folder you create
once the transfer is in folder, transfer data to a cd.If you want to "clone the hd"
You'll need xp to format it,make sure it has a primary partition,xp usually does auto.
then go to run,type:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/
Agree to all in DOS window,in this set-up D: is the new hd,although it can be an
letter xp has asigned to it.When its thru, the hd could/can run the computer, just se
the jumper pins as needed. If you want more info.open cmd, type:XCOPY /
