Using Epson 600 with XP-- ink level query

I have an Epson Stylus Color 600 Printer. It works great.

I recently got a Dell system with Windows XP.

It turns out it has a generic driver that works fine. However, it will not
show you the ink level remaining. So, two questions:

1) Will the printer light start flashing when the ink level gets low (at
least that would be a very early warning).

2) If I hook the printer back to my Gateway system which has W98 and the
appropriate driver, will the ink level showing be accurate, since the
printer was used with a different computer system. That is, does the ink
level indicator measure the ink that is actually left or does it somehow
keep track of how much printing was done and then calculates accordingly (in
which case it wouldn't be accurate here)

Yes.

But why not simply download Epson's driver (from www.epson.com) and Epson
Status Monitor?

If there is nothing specifically listed for XP, use the Windows 2000 driver.

MB,
I had a 600 with the same problem. I'm afraid there is nothing you are
going able to do about the ink level showing up. The printer itself would be
keeping track of the level of the cartridge and would show the correct level
when switching back to W98.
I went to an Epson C82 and got so fed up with the cartridges and their
chips that I ended up with a Canon i850. Problems solved.
