The new computer has XP Pro and a Sony DVD-RW but I cannot get anything to write to the unit. I want to backup the c: drive on it but it claims the path is invalid. There is no separate software for the device.

You must have a separate software. XP does not do DVD-RW natively.

I'm having the identical problem X 2. I have both a CD-rom RW (came with my Dell Dimension) and an external DVD RW

I'm able to read cd's on both. However, when I try to write to either, I get the same error message "d: drive is inaccessible"

When I attempt to use Roxio to simply read the contents of the disc or to format the disk, the response is either "the recorder is busy try another time" OR "there is no recorder

I have loaded software that came with the DVD rw. I have also reinstalled the software that came with the Dimension.

I've spent 6 hours on phone with dell troubleshooting (of course that includes wait time listening to that insane, repetitive music) and their latest hypothesis is that it is an XP issue

Solutions that we've tried to no avail
1. unplugging the dvd rw drive
2. MSCONFIG and cleared out all of the startup item
3. Disabled the DVD R
4. Gone to ASPI and downloaded an XP updated driver..
5. Stood on my head about a dozen times, each time being told to power down the system, turn it back on and then see if anything has changed. It hasn'

I share this only because it may lead you back to wondering about XP than just assuming that the problem is your DVD softwar

Hello David

XP is fine; the problem is not inherently XP. Although
the supplier told me that XP will deal with DVD-RW, they
are going to send me the software anyway. I have found
no way in which Win-XP can cope with DVD-RW on its own.

try a firmware update for the drive from sony website or
cdfreaks.com.

Windows XP includes software for writing to CDR/RW (excluding Packet
writing). For DVD, XP does not support writing to DVD, you need Easy
CD 6 or Nero 6 or equivalent for this!!!!!
