Using Defender on XP SP1

Hi All,

I have been using the older version (beta 1)of the anti-spyware for a long
time, and it worked perfectly. Now the Beta has expired I am stuck without
protection.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 for
the second time, just to see if it was good enough to use. It wasnt! Major
instabilities, and my graphics hardware wont run stable on SP2, so back
another reformat later I'm back to a perfect, stable XP SP1.

Of course now I have everything working as it should under SP1, I cant use
Defender. I'd appreciate some help on how to use Defender under SP1, going
to SP2 is just not an option for me.

Is there a way to extend the Beta so I can continue using Anti Spyware Beta
1? This program has always been what I wanted, and its a shame I cant use it
anymore.

Regards,
Jeremy

I strongly [strongly] believe that if you install SP2 from the get-go, most
preferably using a slipstreamed install CD, that you will have no issue
whatsoever. Furthermore, you'll be more protected, and get the many hundreds
of stability fixes that are only included with SP2.

Baring that, I realize that SP1 is supported right now, but defender
interfaces with many new features built into SP2 only. Such as the security
services that are now integrated with the system under SP2, and the
monitoring done by the security center service.

SP1 still receives critical updates, but nothing more. If you choose to use
that, you'll have to use another vender for malware protection. Ad-Aware is
very nice if you're looking for free. It is my belief though that you will
be less secure and certianly less functional using Windows XP as it was 4
years ago.

Hi Shawn,

Thank you for taking the time to reply - I appreciate it.

As much as you strongly beleive SP2 will cause me no issues, it does.

I have tried twice, one an upgrade from SP1 to SP2, which was unstable, then
a fresh install where I slipstreamed SP2 using a guide I found on the
internet. It was the same - programs crashing for no aparent reason, video
capture dropping frames and general instability that I have come to expect.

Honestly I think its a bit rough that the beta has been locked out, I cant
make the move to SP2, but I still want to use my Anti Spyware software.

Its not like it didnt work, it did its job very well. Simply becuase the
beta has expired I cant use it.

Is there a way to unlock the beta again? An idea would be microsoft make
you pass the genuine advantage test, then unlock the beta for those who cant
use SP2.

For now I'd just like the program back :)

Not that I know of. Although honestly I must say I certianly liked the
program as it was "AntiSpyware" better before they re-released it as Defender.

Hello Jeremy,

• Do you experience graphics problems with games or videos?

First make sure you have the latest driver for your graphics card. This
step alone can correct a lot of video weirdness.
You can find the newest driver at either ATI's or oVidia's site, as
appropriate—the driver you'll get from these sites is often freshet than the
one your graphics board vendor offers.

You can also run some basic graphics hardware tests using the DirectX
diagnostics utility (dick Start'Run, type dxdiag in the dialog box, and
click OK). Click the Display tab, and then run both the DirectDraw and the
Direct3D tests to determine if you have a driver problem, or if something is
installed incorrectly. Let all the tests complete, and then check the results
at the bottom of the page.

If the problem persists, use Task Manager (press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Oelete>) to
close all other applications and background tasks before playing a game or
watching a movie.

If that solves the problem, think about adding more RAM to your PC, Also,
you should reorganize fragmented files—an essential step for smoother
playback of huge video clips—by defragging your hard drive.

Did you make sure the computer was free of malware and that the anti-virus
was turned off before installing SP2? Zone Alarm 6.5 can also cause
problems.
