Is it possible to demote an existing domain controller
(only one in the domain) to a member server and the
promote it to a domain controller with the same or similar
name? How will this affect users, will they first have to
be removed from the domain and the be recreated(only 10 so
not a big issue). I just want a clean system.
Any help in this would be grateful

You can DCPROMO down and back up the only DC with the same name.
All user and computer accounts in the domain will be lost when you DCPROMO
down, and you will have to recreate them manually or restore them from
backup after the promotion back to DC.

Hope that helps!
