Using both Defender and One Care - problem?

Although I've looked around widely, I cannot find a reason why Windows
Defender should not be able to install on my PC simply because I'm currently
using One Care on a trial (90 days) basis. When endeavouring to install
Defender, I'm advised to uninstall One Care first!

I'm sure there must be a simple explanation ........... yet I have been
able to run both Defender and One Care happily on my wife's laptop (but in
that case, Defender was installed before One Care). Both computers are
installed with XP Home, SP2 and all updates.

Any comments will be much appreciated. TIA

Dave

Hi Dave,

MS Defender is part of One Care!
So it is up and running.
Click CRL/ALT/DEL and see of MsMpEng.exe is running in processes.
Thats why Defender wont install ;)

Thanks for responding Tom.

My wife's Windows Defender version is 1.1.1593.0
Product ID 81664-847-8704781-04682

It still works and can show me running processes - which is good!

Are you advising me that if I wish to install Defender as a stand-alone item
that I must uninstall One Care?

Hi Dave,

You are correct, if you want to use only Defender.
Your wife's version is good, is the last won.
You can wait till the 90 days are over.

You've already gotten some good answers, but I'll recap and add one
more piece of information.
If OneCare is installed on a PC running Defender, it is disabled by
OneCare and OneCare takes care of the protection functions of
Defender. You cannot install Defender on a XP computer with OneCare
running.
If you remove OneCare, Defender is enabled as part of the uninstall
process, if it existed previously on an XP machine and always on a
Vista machine.
On both XP and Vista, if you start Defender from the Start menu, it
will run and you can use the utilities in Defender since they do not
exist in the OneCare interface. However, OneCare will always shut
Defender down again at reboot.
If you are running XP with OneCare you can uninstall Defender without
consequences to OneCare, but you would then need to reinstall it (if
desired) when you remove OneCare. In Vista, Defender cannot be
uninstalled, only disabled.
The OneCare anti-malware team was evaluating what it would take to
include access to the extra utilities in Defender through the OneCare
interface, but I have not yet heard on the status of this. I'm hoping
it may be in the next version of OneCare, slated for beta soon, or the
next version after that, slated for the end of the year or early 2008.

I currentley have Wndows Live One Care installed on my XP Home Edition SP2,
I used to have Wimdows Defende. After the Installation of Live One Care I had
to uninstall Windows Defender.Tried to install Windows Defender but it wont
let me unless Live One Care is uninstalled. If I read this correctley its
either one program or the other. Wich do I use?
Thanks
Frank

Defender is an antispyware program. Windows Live OneCare adds
antivirus, firewall, backup, tune-up, etc.
So, if you have already installed OneCare, you don't need to install
Defender. If you really want the tools and utilities that Defender
has, you will need to uninstall OneCare, install Defender, install
OneCare and then turn Defender on when you wish to use it and off when
you are done.

Use OneCare. It incorporates the protection, although not all of the
specific tools, that Defender provides.

Has this problem been address by microsoft as of yet. Should iniate the work
around solution.

Thanks

This thread does not contain a problem, just some confusion about
functionality.

OneCare (as mentioned in another group here today) incorporates all of
Windows Defender's functionality, and provides substantial additional
(antivirus, for example) functionality besides.

If you have both OneCare and Windows Defender installed, Windows Defender
will be disabled. Leave it that way--One Care is taking care of what
Windows Defender did, and much more.

According to:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=932902

OneCare probably disabled Defender, it that one was found on the computer
when you installed OneCare. On the other hand, you don't really need to run
both - Windows Defender is only an antispyware while OneCare is both an
antispyware and antivirus...

Yes, OneCare does disable Defender on install and every time it finds
it started back up.
The anitmalware capabilities of Defender are incorporated and expanded
upon in OneCare. The engine is also the same - msmpeng.exe.
