Hello
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to fax from a
computer using windows XP software and a cable only
modem? When I install the fax software from windows, it
tries to connect via a phone line and is unable to use
the cable internet access to send the fax.

Cheers,

Mike

No it isn't - you need a regular analog voice (POTS) or ISDN line. Fax is a
"narrowband" service.

It isn't anything to do with 'broad' versus 'narrow' band - it's to do with
whether the apparatus being used can decode the tone pulses used by the
telecommunications network to send fax data. As a cable/DSL 'modem' isn't a
modem at all (it doesn't modulate or demodulate data) but a connection to a
vast WAN (wide area network) it has no faxing capability. The most obvious
clue is the fact that, in order to connect to a broadband provider, one
doesn't 'dial-up' - i.e. you don't need a telephone access number.
