Using a damaged hard disk in a working PC....?

Hi

If a hard disk has been damaged by someone turning the PC off at the
mains (it wasn't me, by the way!), and this disk was to be then put
into another machine as a slave drive, is there a chance this could
damage the motherboard of this other PC?

Someone has asked me if I'd hook the broken drive up as a slave for
them, just to see if any data can be salvaged, but I wanted to find out
if there was any risk in doing so first.

HDDs (unless some infamous old IBM HDDs) cannot be damaged this way.
Only the data on them can. There is not risk in connecting the disk
to another comouter.

If the drive is broken, then there is a risk, but it still is small.
The signal lines in the interface cable are all permanently
short-circuit and 5v proof. Unless the HDD is si damaged
that it bridges 12V to the 5V line or a signel line, you are
pretty safe again.
