I've just got a new laptop which has come with "User" already set up. I know
I can change the name on screen but that doesn't change the name in Explorer
file listings, i.e. under "Documents and Settings" it will still show as
"User". Is there an easy way to change it?

No, you cannot change a user account by simply renaming it. Create a new
account for yourself. If you've been using the generic "User" account,
you can copy the data and settings to the new account. You must log
into the new account once before copying anything to it. If you haven't
been using the User account, then don't bother with the copying and
just make yourself a new account and delete the generic User account.

There are methods of changing the name there but there are more bad points than good
points :

Good :
1. You will see your name there.

Bad:
1.Your account can be locked up.
2.Windows will not behave as it shoud.
3.Programs may not work.

The simple and safe thing is Create a new account > And transfer settings. OR you can
create the new account and set the shell folders path to your previous account.

How to change shell folder paths:
1. Tweakui :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
2. From Ramesh's site:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/usershellfolders.htm

There is a tool "Folder Redirector" [Very Good] on the above mentioned site, use that
for this purpose.
