Hi,

I have a client that has a Windows NT server acting as a PDC. She wants
to replace this server with a new Windows 2000 server. IS there a way for me
to get all the users and there permissions, etc. from the PDC onto the
Windows 2000 domain controller or do I have to first upgrade the NT server
to 2000 then run Active Directory on both?

Thanks
Steve

addusers.exe from the Win2000 Resource Kit should be able to
export/import your user accounts. See

You could upgrade the NT4.0 PDC to a W2K domain controller which would be the first
domain controller in a new forest. Be sure to make a full backup before doing a
dcpromo in case you need to back out. Then do a dcpromo on the new W2K server making
it an additional domain controller in the existing domain which will replicate the AD
user/group information to the new W2K server. The old/original W2K server that was
first promoted will hold all five fsmo roles and be the global catalog server for the
new W2K domain. If you decide to decommission the old/original W2K domain controller
be sure to use dcpromo to demote it which will transfer all five of the fsmo roles to
the new W2K server and you will also need to make it a global catalog server. Of
course dns configuration is very important in a W2k domain and you will have to make
sure that the domain computers point to the right domain controller by IP address
either by dhcp scope or correct static IP address. -- Steve

Hi,

Thanks for your input. What I have decided to do is upgrade the PDC to
Windows 2000 and then add the new server as a child in the domain. I have
been trying it on my test lab but seem to be running into a problem.
I easily upgraded a PDC to Win 200 server thus it obtained all 5 roles.

When I run dcpromo on the 2nd server wanting to add it to the domain as
a child domain I get the error message

" The domain upgradedserver.example.com is not an Active Directory Domain or
an Active Directory Domain Controller for the domain could not be contacted"

This happens at the point when I am putting in a username, password and
the domain name , upgradedserver.example.com.
I installed DNS (internal on the upgraded server and I do show the 2nd
server registered in it. Am I missing something here. Should I be adding a
"child domain"?

Thanks
Steve
