Users prompted 4 credentials when trying to save a Word file from

We have a number of files (Word, Excel, etc) posted on our web site for
external users to download and use, however one major problem we keep hearing
from external users is that when they open a document (which they normally do
just by directly clicking the link), which will then open Word or Excel, but
then when they go to save that file (from within Excel or Word) they are
prompted for log-in credentials as if they were trying to save it back to the
web site / webserver.

Is there any easy work-around to prevent this from happening (them being
prompted for credentails)? Ideally when they go to save, it would just
default them to their own "my documents" folder, or their C: drive for
saving. What causes this, if it a function of Office, or IE, or what?

There are some bugs in previous version of Word, etc. Your users will have
to make sure they have the latest service packs and updates installed for
the version.

It's not controllable on your end.

Thanks for the answer Tom, the strange thing is that I happens to me too, and
I'm using Office 2007 with all the latest updates. But I guess if we can't
control it, we can't control it.
 
It's a bit of a pain, but I think if they cancel out of those
username/password prompts they can save the documents okay.

Does using "Save As" work better?
 
It seems they are inadvertantly and unintentionally trying to save the file
back to the web server (maybe not realising they are doing so).....so of
course, they don't have access, and therefore getting the password prompt.

In order to save the file to their computer, they should right click the
link and choose "Save As" (or the equivalent command in their particular
brower).

Or, perhaps put the word file in a ZIP folder, link to the zip file, when
they open it and expand the contents, they can open the word file normally
on their PC with word, edit and save as usual.
