i have a spreadsheet on EX2002 which uses the users edit
ranges protection facility. although it works fine under
windows 2000 and winXP machines. none of the 9x's will
pay attention to the config. does anyone know of a
workaround?

i have ds client installed on the machine.

please help

Well, I don't have an earlier version of Windows to confirm what you're
saying but I can't find anything that suggests there is this limitation in
Excel 2002. For instance this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;289269

talks about how NT group permissions are not available on pre-NT OSs, but
seems to indicate that, in thoses case, a password will be required:

"NOTE: On Windows 98 or Windows Me workstations, or when your user cannot be
validated, the correct password is required to edit the range."

Fwiw. (Could you go to a user with the problem, witness the problem first
hand on a version of the Excel workbook that you know has range permissions
set and then check Help, About? Sorry, I just can't help but think
something isn't right.)

Just to confirm what Jim wrote.

I use win98 and xl2002 at home. I just tried protecting a worksheet with a
range that could be edited with a password. It worked ok.
