David

Hello,

I have a new PC with Windows XP Pro SP1 for the first time.
I have done some reading on the web about setting up users, I think I
understand.
At present I'm the only user, No passwords set-up or Log-On screen.

What I want to do is create 3 users, Me, My Wife and Daughter.
I can do this O.K I think from user manager.

What I need to understand is about installing programs?

How do I install a program once that everybody can use?
and How to install a program just for 1 of the users?

Also if I get another PC, maybe with XP Home, is it the same

Sorry for XP Newbie Question?

Many Thanks - David

Hi David,

The more you work with it, the easier it will get. Home works basically the
same, except for some few operations that you need to do from safe mode.
Lets look at your questions:
What I need to understand is about installing programs?

Well, it's basically the same as installing software in any other Windows
installation. For WinXP Pro, you must be an administrator or power user to
have installation priviledges. To install in a limited account, you should
right-click the setup file and use "run as" and enter an admin username and
password. You will find that much about this depends however, on the
software install routine. Programs whose installer is "user aware" will
install for all users, those written for Win9x may need to be installed for
each.
How do I install a program once that everybody can use?

Again, you can't ensure this. After installing it, place the program
shortcut under the AllUsers start menu here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

Then log on as another user and try it. If it runs, then you're fine. If
not, that is an indication that you may need to either install it under that
user, or that you need to set appropriate permissions on the program folder
(this happens often with limited users accounts). This article can help with
that:

and How to install a program just for 1 of the users?

This is the reverse, you simply place the shortcut to the program in your
personal start menu folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs

This simply has the effect of hiding it from other users. However, you can
also set permissions on the program folder itself to prevent other users
from using it. Setting permissions:

Also if I get another PC, maybe with XP Home, is it the same

Basically, it's the same, except to set permissions you need to logon in
Safe mode as the Administrator. WinXP Home has simple file sharing by
default, and you cannot access the security settings from normal mode.
