Hello!

I am new to XP and I am trying to setup my machine to
have 3 user accounts. With 98SE I could remove Start
Menu items from users as I deemed neccesary while
preserving the start menu from my own log on. We have 3
toddlers in the house who love to play their toddler
software, but I liked the option of removing all the
other menu options from the start menu to avoid
accidental clicks, programs opening, etc. Can I customize
the start menu for EACH user?

Thanks!

software, but I liked the option of removing all the
other menu options from the start menu to avoid
accidental clicks, programs opening, etc. Can I customize
the start menu for EACH user?

The start menu items for ALL users are stored here:-

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

Those for individual users are stored in their own folders here:-

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Start Menu

Open the "All Users" start menu folder then your own user account
start menu folder (in separate windows) then right click on the task
bar and select "Tile Windows Vertically".

You will then be able to drag all the items out of the "All Users"
start menu into your own. Dragging with a left mouse click should MOVE
them, not copy them, but make sure they are gone from "All Users". If
they are not in the "All Users" start menu then they won't show up
when other users log on. Users see what is in the "All Users" start
menu and what is in their own start menu.

You can then look at what is in the users other than your self and
copy (right mouse click drag and select copy) into their start menus
only what you want them to have.

If you instal new programs in the future you will have to see where
the start menu shortcut for the new program is placed. Some program
installers put the shortcuts into "All Users" and some into the start
menu for the user who instals the program.
