Spent whole day installing Windows XP home, Office 2003, Norton Internet Sec,
etc on new hard drive

After live-updating Norton, got message to restart

Now, for the first time today (after 8 hours!), Windows is promptig for a
Username! Searched this Newsgroup, tried to start in safe mode in order to
log on as administrator, got this message:

The system cannot log you on now because the domain [my computer name] is
not available

Shut out of my own computer! I am the only user - is this a know issue, is
it a virus?

Please help

Well that does not sound good at all. I have heard/read about that problem
in the past and never had seen a resolution for an XP Home computer. The
message is something that you could expect to see on an XP Pro computer that
is joined to an Active Directory domain. Since you can not access your
computer what you could try is an upgrade/repair install booting from the
install cdrom. Hopefully that will fix the problem and allow you to logon as
local administrator and preserve your installed applications but you will
need to first install your service pack [if not on the install disk] and
then all critical security updates from Windows Updates when done. My guess
is that it could be malware related and if you do get access back be sure to
check for such right away. Make sure you NEVER connect to the internet
without a firewall protecting your computer. The links below may help. ---
