Hi all.
Had a vile virus/trojan which required the attention of MalwareBytes anti
malware program. After much ado, userinit was deleted giving me the dreaded
"loading your settings - logging out - saving your settings - loading your
settings" loop. As my Acer only came with pre-loaded setup discs and no XP
disk, I did the XP Repair with a 30 day trial xp disc. As I didn't want to
run the risk of having My Documents over-written, I did a new install in
c:\windows\NEW (which of course now wants to be registered. I have the
original key on the laptop label). All good, I select the XP Home that loads
(the new load) at start up and from the new OS I can access all of my
original files and folders. So, how do I repair the original
settings/registry so my original (registered) OS will fire up?

Cheers, Geoff

How to edit a hive with regedit
http://www.rwin.ch/xp-live/regedit.htm

Check Userinit :
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Userinit = C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,
or
Userinit = Userinit.exe,
are corrects.
