Help!

My server's hard drive crashed. I reinstalled Windows Server 2003, re
enabled FrontPage Extensions 2002 and restored my backup of my INETPUB
directory. All the files are there, I re calculated the web, I checked the
server health, and within IIS manager, I made sure anonymous access is
enabled. And yet, when anyone attempts to visit the site, they are prompted
for a user name and password. This didn't happen previously.

Can anyone suggest what I may have missed in restoring the server so that
users can visit the site without a user name and password?

Thanks!

Enabling anonymous access simply tells IIS if the IUSR account is available
on the directory than it can be authenticated with the account. It doesn't
actually set the permissions up correctly for you.

You need to make sure that the Windows IUSR account has proper access to the
directory. It may not unless you restored all the permissions properly. If
you have FP, you can open the root web and set the permissions so that the
Everyone group has Browse access. Then do a recalculate hyperlinks on the
site and a check and fix extensions.

You may also have to do this manually (which is always a pain). In Windows
Explorer, add the IUSR account to the inetpub directory and ensure it has
read/execute access to the inetpub directory then propegate the changes.
This could end up wiping out other permissions on subwebs so it needs to be
done carefully and you may need to set the permissions individually on the
various directories instead of propegating the changes.

Hope this helps,

That did the trick. Thank you! The IUSER account didn't have read access to
the WWWROOT directory.
