Last Friday I had an encounter with a virus or worm but Norton Antivirus
quanentined a file which was removed and errors fixed with Norton
SystemWorks. Now my system and all programs work ok except that I have to
'stand on my head' to get past the sign-in security. Here is what happens.

After starting XP and entering my administrator account, I get my desktop
with a superimposed "Run As" pop up. (It has a 'keys on ring' logo just
under the blue bar) The body of the popup has a 'checked' radio button
defining the current user (me/administrator) and 2nd 'unchecked' button for
adding other users. Below the current user button is a checked box:
"Protects my computer and data from unauthorized program activity."

To gain access to my desktop, I must uncheck this box for 5 cycles at which
time the popup goes away (assume the 5 cycles are necessary to open programs
running in the background) . Now when I click a program on the desktop I
again get the same "Run As" popup. Uncheck the "Protects...."
box, the program opens and I can proceed. [Note: a very similar problem was
posted on this newsgroup on 9/22/03 by "Dean". He has recieved no response
to date.]

The popup also appears anytime I try to change settings through control
panel, etc.

By uninstalling my Norton software (later reinstalling), I have determined
that thepopup is not related to Norton SystemsWorks. Thus it must be part of
XP. Where does it reside and can I modify it? (I never saw the popup until
after I recovered from the virus problem.) It doesn't prevent me from using
the computer but it is very agrivating.

Excuse the extended explaination. Any help would be appreciated.

I've never seen anything such as what you describe in XP. It might be a
by-product of the virus or worm. Also, despite your having removed Norton
SystemWorks and presumably still encountering the message, it may in fact be
a Norton issue. Symantec products are notorious for leaving remnants of
themselves around. I would start with Symantec tech support on this.
