is there a way to 'fix' a profile that has become unusable (select it
and windows crashes/shutsdown.

is there a way to copy a user profile exactly to a new username?

I tried that but got the same results. Trying to find a work around to
the problem. my first account got foo-barred. If I try to launch from
'it', xp stops, memory dumps. If I try to create a restore point or
recover 'to' a restore point same problem. When I tried to copy the id,
windows stopped and mem-dumped.

Any utilities to try to check the profile to see if correctable?

Not that I am aware of. Try it again in Safe mode. Log on with the
Administrators account and create the new user profile. Make sure you
use the edit menu to cut-n-paste.
You may want to go into System Properties, Advanced tab, Startup and
Recovery button, then uncheck automatic restart on error.
MS article on the corrupt profile, then on the same info as the old
link.
