Hi everyone.
Have had major PC problems which I won't go into. But with my lack of knowledge I tried a repair using my recovery disk but kept getting the blue screen of death. In the end I chose to re-instal rather than repair. BUT obviosly I now have a new user profile but my previous profile is still there any way I can link my new logon/profile to the original one. As I now appear to have two installations of windows is there any way I can remove one of them. I am actually considering formatting my HD & starting again - do you think this is wise

What you seem to have done is re-install Windows to a new location ... what you should have done, when promted, was to delete the existing partition then install ... this would give you a 'clean' installation.

To save any messing about, start again but this time delete the partition on your HD. Windows will do the rest.

A word of warning to owners of "recovery CDs" that do not own a "real" XP CD ... do not follow the above advice.

:)

Thats exactly what I did - I wanted to retrieve my email & some files and I didn't know if I would lose them which is why I took the 'safe' option. I only have a revcovery disk so is there anything I can do. I am considering buying XP so that I have a disk. If there is no solution to this I may retrieve the files I need & just format the HD as it appears I have to reinstall all of my programs anyway even though they are all still on the HD but under the previous user profile.
