My husband said he turned on our desktop this morning and he got a black
screen with a lot of writing on it and the one thing he remembered was the
wording, "DO YOU WANT TO USE PROFILE 1."
He clicked on that and the machine then continued to start normally. I told
him he should have copied what it said on the screen, but he said he got
quite nervous and just clicked on PROFILE 1 without thinking.
Does anyone know what this might have been? (I think I remember it happening
once before, whether on this PC or not, I do not know.)
Thanks for any help.

its likely to be referring to
a "hardware profile".

there are certain situations
that perhaps someone does
not want certain devices
to enabled.

briefly, an example would
be that profile 1 should not
have the cd rw drive enabled
and perhaps a profile 2 would
have the cd drive disabled but
the dvd drive disabled.

the above is only an example.
and for the regular computer
user on a regular computer with
regular peripherals, the hardware
profiles may not be necessary.

if a profile was inadvertently
created then it is likely to
be simply a copy of your
defaulted settings anyways.

so it a technician or super
computer geek didn't create
one with a specific purpose
in mind, then you might
consider deleting the
additional profile

Thank you. My husband and I are quite new to computers and really do not
understand too much about the workings of a computer. I guess what we were
really asking about was - is what happened SERIOUS? Is it something that we
should be worried about? Today the computer started with no problem at all.
We looked in the Windows XP book we have and under User Profile we saw the
following:
"To open Profile Manager, go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/User
Profiles/Settings."
When we did that, we see only one line with Owner mentioned.
We did try a "flash drive" on one of the USB ports yesterday and wonder if
that could have caused the black screen with the white writing and "If you
want to use Profile 1 -click on Profile 1" (when we turned on computer
yesterday), which we described in our original post. (My husband did click on
"Profile 1" and the computer started as usual.)

it's likely not to be
anything serious, because
what you are experiencing
is some kind of control
being implemented by
windows but created by
the user.

you mentioned the profile
button under the advanced tab,
there is also another tab called
hardware and under it there is a
hardware profile button too.

double check the hardware
tab i mentioned and if there
is a profile one listed then
i think this is where the
problem may be. if there
is a profile 1, then let us
know.

because you mentioned you
are new to computers, here
are a couple of links that

Thank you. Went to Systems and Hardwasre/Profiles and saw just one entry/line
= "Profile 1 (current)"
=====================

ok, so you discovered
the profile.

it states "current" simply
because you are currently
logged in to that profile.

however, it is unclear
if deleting it is an option
or necessary.

if there were two line items,
then deleting one of them would
not be a problem.

perhaps if you reboot
and do not select "profile1",
then windows will create
and use a defaulted hardware
profile. thus profile 1 will
become a secondary profile
and delete the line.

if however, you have no
other options to log into
windows except via profile 1,
then what you might want to
modify the options for that
profile

i think there is an option
to simply default the system
to that one profile. perhaps
you might want to rename the
profile to "system" or something.

there are additional options
provided in and around that
dialog window where the
hardware profile is listed.
