User Problem

That does cause the new name to appear. Thank you. The object of adding a
new users was to transfer some files from the original user. When we try to
have all hidden and invisible operating system files appear in order to do
that, the Folder/View settings just revert to default when we click
Apply/OK.

How can we get around that?

Is this a limited user?

I get the message:"Failed to set security on the destination file error.
Access is denied"
After chasing this a while, it turns out this problem may exist because I
have a new, and newly formatted, C:\ drive. I located a kb (lost the
number) that says to got to Computer Management and expand "Local Users",
which unfortunately doesn't appear.

Looks like this is not a new problem. I see shareware which presumably
permits these settings to be changed. Always makes me nervous, tho.

Any further thoughts?

BTW, kb 811151 address my basic problem exactly, only it doesn't work
because of the folder/view setting problem

Also read this MS KB article about how to take ownership of files.

There is also a utility named: Unlocker
I have not used it but it has been mentioned a number of times.

Well, I have run the gamut on your suggestions, but apparently I have not
been able to gain ownership of the key files. Several of the following are
for XP Pro only so don't apply. The closest thing is the suggested
kb308421. I have gone thru this, in safe mode, carefully, but after getting
into the Security tab, I do not see one or more of the request tabs.
Apparently because of this, I can get the hidden and protected files on my
own user name (still 'Owner") but that is all.

I took a shot at 'Unlocker" however I felt the documentation left a lot to
one's imagination, not good for me (I get nervous when I get a 'Fatal Error'
blue screen) but I will try that again.

Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.
Thx

I tried the first two Tweakhound methods - afraid to try the third. No joy.

BUT - I'm not at all sure we are barking up the right tree. There seems to
be semantics problem wherein terms like 'set security' are used
interchangeably with 'file sharing' Are they the same thing?

I have rearranged file sharing properties all over the place, but when I try
to do what I want to do, copy one user profile onto another user, I get
error messages of the type:
"Failed to set Security on the Destination Profile. Error - The process
cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" or
"Failed to set Security on the Destination Profile. Error - Access is
denied."

KB811151 describes how to transfer user profiles from one user to another.
The method requires setting up a third profile, logging on to it, then set
files so hidden files and operating system files show. This is where the
whole process stops. If these changes are made in Folder Options, they will
not be reflected when you OK out. In other words, there is no way to get
the hidden files to show., and this is where the error message occur.

One thing I have notice but have been hesitant to try is all (3) of thee
hidden files appear automatically in Safe Mode, See any reason the folder
copying process couldn't be done in this Mode?

BTW, I just tried reinstalling MS Maps & Streets (CD on my G: Drive), and
after being well into the installation process, I got an error saying a
couple of files couldn't be read, I didn't have access.

This is new, and newly formatted, NTFS drive. I understand that may have
something to do with all this.

Any further thoughts out there?

Dave

All is well until step 8, which gets us "Failed to set Security on the
Destination Profile. Error - Access is denied."

Dave

You cannot copy the profile of the user you are currently logged in as.
Log in as a different user and then copy the profile you wanted to the
target user's profile.

If this does not work then I'm stumped, fresh out of ideas and search
results did not
show any clear solution.

Sorry

Also I'll bet the problem is an obvious one but for some reason I'm not
looking in the right direction.

Well, I certainly appreciate your efforts. I hope it is obvious, but I'm
beginning to doubt it. I have done a few searches as well, and I think
there is an issue when a new, NTFS HD, is to be used. Apparently, the
various comp mfgrs initial software addresses this issue, that is why it is
not covered in XP Home (doesn't need to be).

Well, I'll think about it a while - and thank you again

Did the problem occur after you upgraded to a new drive?
Do you still have the old drive with Windows still installed on it?

Do you still have the old drive with Windows still installed on it?
Yes - but it became corrupt as a side effect of trying to use it to clone a
new,
larger drive. What a mess.

But now the good news. Problem has been solved. Not surprisingly, operator
error.

After I gave up on the kb811151 routine, which did not work, I went to the
C/P/System/System Properties/User Profile Settings route. After doing that
about 20 times, I finally discovered I was trying to copy my own files to my
own profile. No wonder they didn't appear on another profile. The
language on some of Bill Gates instructional panels leaves a lot to be
desired; there are a couple in that chain.

Anyway - looks like I'm OK, at least for the moment. I'll keep all profiles
a while until I'm sure things are as they should be. Again my thanks for
hanging in with me. It is greatly appreciated.
