I have XP Pro SP2. I want to limit my children from the ability to save
music files and movie files on any of the drives on a local computer.
However, I would like to allow read the files. How could I create a user
account to restrict the permissions?

You might want to check out the capabilities of the free Shared Computer
Toolkit from Microsoft that requires SP2. Otherwise assuming you are using
NTFS file system you would need to make sure that they do not have write
access to any folders on the computer which be default for a regular user
would be the root/drive folder and their user profile folder under documents
and settings. You could create a group, add them to the group, and give deny
permissions for write for those folders. However that would prevent them
from saving ANY files to those folders as you can not specify file type in
file permissions. If you are using XP Pro you can create "disk quotas" for
users that may also help in managing how much drive space they use. The
links below explain more. --- Steve
