User Permissions for ApplicationFunctionality

I just did a fresh re-load of W2000 Pro on my home office
machine after a registry corruption. It seems now that not
all the apps or devices (like a CD R/W) are accessable by
my power user login (or for that matter by the 3 other
family members occasionally using it). I am getting
routine errors with screen saver apps (Webshots) or
Gigabyte BIOS Tools, or ICQ, etc, etc. In addition, when
trying to access a second machine on my home LAN, I can't
get into W Explorer and have permissions issues there with
a list of accessable app's directories only, and therefore
have trouble sharing files or browsing.

IS there a GUI tool that can help with this? I am finding
it slow going in the MMC. It seems like the permmissions
need to be in the directory of the app as well as any
other directories they inhabit, plus, perhaps "My
Directories". Is there an easier way to make this (and
others on the LAN) more user friendly, while still making
sure I'm protected from the WAN/internet world? Maybe
close a few private things internally, Quicken, etc??

It seems like I need to pay atention to "share" as well as
the permissions in File/Directory - Properties - Security

I appreciate any direction, tool or primer you can offer.

Thanks

the symptoms that you describe seems tell me that
your file system on this machine would be fat 32,
have you formatted your hd in ntfs?

for your protection on the internet hand
catch a firewall software for free as outpost.

bye.

Edoardo,

The C: partition is NTFS, but the D: partition is FAT32,
and an attached network drive (Ximeta SCSI ) is NTFS

A couple attached W98 machines are obviously FAT32, and
the 4th machine is W2000 and NTFS.

I figure I need to use sharing for the benefit of the W98
machines, but the NTFS disks (between machines)are
creating the challenges in providing access to the files
and the devices (CD-R/W's mainly)

Are you recommending Outpost as firewall software? I've
been using Zone Alarm 4.0 which is a little fussy and I
have to keep up 4 machines, so a better solution is always
interesting. I have a Linux based router with an older
kernel (no iptables, only ipfwadm) so I haven't made it do
the hard work of closing ports and filtering.

I appreciate the help.

Mike
